MYSTIC LYON is thrilled to present "Embrace at the Intersection" a new mural by artist Jimmy Castillo. This image of Fifth Ward residents is a photographic halftone of separated tiny dots that has been hand-painted creating a look that is both painterly and photographic. This new mural is on view at Mystic Lyon art space at 5017 Lyons Avenue, Houston, Texas 77020 in Houston’s historic Fifth Ward. It will remain on view until November 1, 2021.
Artist Jimmy Castillo says, “The embrace is at intersection of Lyons Avenue and Mystic Street., a physical place, but is also at the intersection of ideas and emotions. It “embraces” a moment that is at the intersection of identity and community; of presence and memory; and of life and loss.”
Jimmy Castillo is an artist, administrator, and educator in Houston, Texas. He is a graduate of the High School for Performing and Visual Arts in Houston and also received both his BFA (2000) and MFA (2019) from the University of Houston. Jimmy is currently the Director of Civic Art + Design at Houston Arts Alliance and Adjunct Faculty at the Glassell School of Art. His work has been exhibited nationally and is represented in the collections at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas in Austin.

Jimmy’s studio practice is photo-based and often interdisciplinary. His current projects include a photographic series about Northside, the Houston neighborhood where he was born, and where he still lives with his family.
Mystic Lyon is located on the corner of Lyons Avenue and Mystic Street in Houston's historic Fifth Ward neighborhood. In addition to public art installations, Mystic Lyon offers performances, meditation, Deep Listening, sound sessions, films, Gong Therapy, Laugh Club, community coffees, reading and writing groups, and Mobile Nap Deliveries. It also plays host to the Gong Grant Micro Grant, Fifth Ward Badminton Club, Root Lock Sessions, and the Fifth Ward Chamber of Commerce.
