Houston Dynamo FC have reached an agreement with midfielder Boniek García to extend his contract through the 2021 MLS season, the Club announced today.
García returns to Houston for his 10th season with the Club and is the third field player in Club history to reach the milestone, joining Dynamo legends Ricardo Clark and Brad Davis. The Honduran international has represented Houston in 247 games across all competitions, the fourth most in Club History. He has also earned 193 starts for the Dynamo across all competitions, seven starts shy of being the fourth player to reach 200 with the Dynamo.

“Boniek is a consummate professional, a player who brings a strong mentality on and off the field every day, and a Club legend,” said Dynamo Senior Vice President and General Manager Matt Jordan. “We are very pleased that Boniek will be returning to the Dynamo for his 10th season with the Club.”
García appeared in 18 games for the Dynamo in 2020 and earned seven starts throughout the abbreviated season. The midfielder surpassed former Dynamo defender Corey Ashe for the third-most league appearances in Club history on Sept. 23, 2020 against the Chicago Fire. García has earned 174 starts and made 219 appearances for the Dynamo in MLS action since 2012.

“Boniek is an excellent player and an even better person, just a great representative of our Club,” Dynamo head coach Tab Ramos said. “We are happy that he has decided to stay. He will be an important part not only in the games, but as a mentor to younger players we are bringing along.”
The two-time FIFA World Cup veteran reached 200 regular season appearances in 2019, making him one of four players to reach that milestone with the Club. The midfielder won his first trophy with the Club in 2018 after helping lead Houston to its first Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title. Additionally, the midfielder was a key contributor to helping the Dynamo reach the Western Conference Final in 2017 and the 2012 MLS Cup final after scoring a goal and adding an assist in the Eastern Conference Final triumph over D.C. United.

García’s impact extends beyond his contributions on the field as the Honduran international continued his offseason tradition of distributing donated shoes, clothes and soccer equipment in his native Honduras. García donated more than $10,000 in donations in 2020 following a challenging year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
With the addition of García, the Dynamo have 29 players on the active roster for the 2021 MLS season.
