Houston has a storied history of some really interesting buildings and landmarks. If you have ever driven down just about any freeway in the greater Houston area you have seen them. From the "Be Someone" bridge to Magic Island, The Battleship Texas to the Enron sign and many more. During this creatively informative Zoom session, you'll have the chance to take another look at some favorite Houston landmarks — and discover new ones — as authors Dana DuTerroil and Joni Fincham discuss their book 111 Places in Houston That You Must Not Miss in an online program at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 2. 

'111 Places' is presented as part of the Bart Truxillo Program Series, which honors the memory of pioneer preservationist and Preservation Houston co-founder Bart Truxillo. Dana DuTerroil and Joni Fincham create personalized guides to and tours of Houston through Trip Chandler, the business they founded in 2015 to showcase the Bayou City’s unique aspects. They also write about Houston for a variety of publications, including Houstonia and Fodor’s Travel.

The Houston guidebook is one of the latest entries in the global 111 Places series. Each chapter highlights a different local treasure, ranging from stately historic buildings such as the 1910 Harris County Courthouse to heritage businesses like Spanish Village restaurant. The book also includes often overlooked reminders of Houston history, like the bell from the first battleship U.S.S. Houston, sunk in the Pacific during World War II, that is now displayed at Sam Houston Park. In their illustrated talk, DuTerroil and Fincham will discuss how they selected sites for the guide and will share some of the fascinating stories they uncovered. They’ll also make the case for preserving some of Houston’s modern-day landmarks like Magic Island, the 1980s Egyptian-themed supper club on the Southwest Freeway.

This program will be presented via Zoom. Registrants will receive additional information, including a link to join the program, no later than the morning of March 2. Access to this program is free for members of Preservation Houston and Pier andamp; Beam. Registration is $10 for non-members. Go here for more information.
