Summer vacation is about to get wild! Public registration begins Monday, March 7 for Camp Zoofari at the Houston Zoo. At Camp Zoofari, each day is a new adventure with educational activities focused on building curiosity, wonder and empathy for animals. Running weekly from June 6 through Aug. 5, excluding the week of July 4, Camp Zoofari offers an exciting lineup of programs for children ages 6-14 that have been specially created to connect campers to animals to inspire a life-long love of wildlife. Each camp includes guided Zoo experiences, ambassador animal meet-and-greets, giraffe feeding, carousel rides, and more. As campers explore the Zoo and meet Zoo animals, they also learn how to help save them in the wild.
The Zoo has added six brand-new camp programs for summer 2022. Themes like Animal Survivors, Warriors for Wildlife, and Masters of the Wild will join returning favorites like Zooperheroes and All Access, which helps kids make friends and have fun at camp while learning about wildlife. Every topic includes opportunities to interact directly with a variety of Zoo staff, meet animals up close, and explore staff-only areas. Camp Zoofari is much more than what families may experience on a typical visit to the Zoo.
Camp Zoofari is operated by the Houston Zoo conservation education department. To complement the Zoo’s 13 full-time educators, Camp Zoofari is supported by 35 seasonal camp guides, and 100 members of Zoo Crew, the organization’s teen volunteer initiative. For the youngest age groups, Camp Zoofari staff maintain an 8-to-1 camper-staff ratio, surpassing the 10-to-1 ratio mandated by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
