Greentown Labs, a community of climatetech and cleantech pioneers working to design a more sustainable world, is in the process of converting the former Fiesta grocery store in the 4200 block of Main Street into a second location of its successful climatech incubator. Projected to open in spring 2021, the incubator will provide more than 40,000 square feet of prototyping lab, office, and community space for about Houston area 50 startup companies and create a hub of activity for up to 300 employees. Greentown Houston is the first outpost of the Somerville, Mass.-based climatech incubator, which aims to foster emerging new energy companies. It’s a major step in Houston’s bid to help lead the global energy transition to a lower carbon future.
The project is the first major addition to Rice Management District’s innovation district beyond its anchor, The Ion, which will anchor the district and is destined to become the epicenter for Houstonand#39;s innovation ecosystem as an inclusive, dynamic, vibrant and dense hub focusing on quality collaborations between entrepreneurs, incubators, accelerators, corporations, academics, and the Houston community when it opens in 2021. The 288,000 square-foot building will accommodate multiple uses, including shared workspace, prototyping and maker resources, event space, classrooms, food and beverage offerings as well as indoor/outdoor communal areas with shared amenities. The Ionand#39;s Mission is to anchor, activate, and accelerate the innovation ecosystem through partnerships, pathways, and programs that create opportunities to advance and sustain resilient economic growth in Houston.
